What foods improve lactation?

Scientists have proven that the quantity and quality of milk during lactation directly depends on the products a woman consumes. Therefore, if the question arises about how to increase lactation, you need to think first of all not about drugs and medicines, but about increasing the calorie content of your own diet. But this should be done correctly, without going beyond eating healthy and wholesome food.

Diet as a means to increase lactation

Before you start eating more, you need to analyze your existing diet and determine its nutritional value. During breastfeeding, it should be on average 700-1000 kcal higher than in the normal state, for which the energy value of foods consumed per day should be on average 2300 kcal.

The mother's daily diet should include poultry or fish, milk and fermented milk products, cottage cheese, cheese, vegetables and fruits. It is better to consume butter as a fat, but not more than 20 g per day. The main means of helping a woman both increase lactation and maintain it at this level is maintaining the correct ratio of these products. You should not allow an overweight in the direction of proteins, carbohydrates, and even more so fats. By increasing the consumption of one component, you need to adjust the amount of others.

The volume of water you drink should be at least 2 liters per day. Some women believe that if they drink more fluids, the amount of milk they produce will increase. And this is true, but at the same time its composition will change. It must be taken into account that in this case the milk will contain less protein and vitamins. Therefore, this is not the best way to increase lactation. The level of protein in breast milk is also affected by how much a nursing mother consumes sweets - sugar, buns, confectionery, bread. The more such foods are eaten, the less protein the child receives.

Foods that increase breast milk lactation

Nutrition during breastfeeding should be varied and balanced.
It is breast milk that contains everything you need (vitamins, microelements and various nutrients), so it is difficult to replace it with anything. There are a huge number of products that help improve lactation, but such products require combination with each other. Otherwise, the use of this or that product threatens the young mother with increased gas formation and diarrhea. Products for lactation should be high in calories, rich in protein, healthy carbohydrates and vitamins. The diet of a young mother should consist of meat, dairy and fermented milk products, cheeses, cereals, nuts, vegetables, berries and fruits. Breastfeeding requires a woman to drink the required amount of fluid, at least two liters per day, however, an excess of it in the body can affect the quality of milk. The liquid you drink should include plain, non-carbonated water, which is the key to good lactation. There are also a variety of drinks that help moms cope with insufficient lactation. How to Simply Recommend

Why the medicine does not work The key to successful treatment is, of course, following all the doctor’s recommendations and informing him of all significant changes during therapy. However, a specialist can talk as much as he wants about the regimen and duration of taking the drug, but most patients will still violate these rules. Read more

To improve milk secretion, it is recommended to drink warm green tea with milk or honey. Ginger drink, as well as herbal teas (melissa, dill, cumin, nettle, oregano, hawthorn, fennel, anise) increase lactation. Such teas are freely sold in pharmacies. Rich in vitamins and good for increasing lactation, dried fruit compote. Non-concentrated, that is, freshly squeezed carrot and currant juice diluted with water, as well as an infusion of grated carrots and milk will have a beneficial effect on lactation. During breastfeeding, it is better to replace coffee with barley drink. In addition to the fact that it tastes good, it is very healthy and helps improve lactation. All drinks that increase and improve milk production must be consumed warm.

Products that increase and decrease lactation

Before you start artificially increasing the amount of milk, you need to be firmly convinced that there really is not enough milk. If you cannot determine this on your own, you can always consult a pediatrician.

But if it turns out that the baby is malnourished, then first of all you need to limit yourself to foods that reduce lactation: chocolate, coffee, citrus fruits, mushrooms, cocoa. In addition, you need to exclude alcohol in any of its manifestations. Contrary to the stereotype, not only is it not a product that increases lactation, but it also negatively affects the child’s health, since it quickly enters milk through the blood. The same applies equally to nicotine.

You should also exclude onions, garlic and spices from the diet, as they give the milk an unpleasant aftertaste, which may cause the baby to refuse to breastfeed.

If we talk about how to increase lactation, we cannot fail to mention such a remedy as warm tea with milk. Sometimes it is recommended to drink it with honey, but since honey is a strong allergen, it should be added to tea with caution. Tea should be drunk half an hour before feeding the baby. This simple method does not affect the amount of milk, but the intensity of its production.

Lactation is also stimulated by meat and chicken broths, cheeses (especially Adyghe and feta cheese), seeds and a variety of fermented milk products. In addition, you can start drinking drinks with natural lactation enhancers - dandelion, ginger, cumin, radish, carrots and fennel - on a regular basis.

Doshas and food choice. Part 2

  • Lina: September 15, 2020 at 10:02 pm —
    Helen,

    “When cooked, do vegetables and fruits have the same effect on the doshas?”:) - yes, the characteristics change. “I really love pies, please tell me how baking and dough affect doshas and digestion? For example, a simple carrot pie or pumpkin pie or charlotte with apples? Is there a strong influence on the doshas in this case? It’s clear that I won’t eat the whole pie, but I wonder if such a pie could be good for you?” - baking (and this is almost always yeast dough) is well tolerated by people with high agni (digestive fire). If digestion is impaired, all these baked goods lead to bubbling, increased gas formation, even a tiny piece is enough. “It seemed to me that according to Ayurveda it is better to forget about cakes altogether, especially with creams” - there is no benefit from this food, the Ayurvedic taste of this pastry is sweet, and in our diet it already predominates (sweet vipak), which enhances kapha and amu (toxins). We need other tastes, which are rare in the diet, especially bitter, pungent, astringent. It is better to take the sweet taste from natural products - fruits, dried fruits, and not from cakes with creams, especially industrial ones. What was added to these cakes - only one knows - yes, everything is possible, there are no special prohibitions. “Everything is medicine or poison depending on the quantity.” Or as the Charaka Samhita states something similar: “There is nothing in nature that, taking into account time, place and dose, is not a medicine.” “By the way, I didn’t find any information about pumpkin, but they seem to make good healthy porridges and cream soups from it...” - you mean, you didn’t find anything about pumpkin here on the site? So there’s a lot of things missing here, the site is an advertising one, there’s no task of putting everything that exists here, you can’t copy the entire Internet. “Do I understand correctly: Vata can have wheat and carrots, which means Vata will be fine with carrot cake? Is it better for Kapha to abstain from flour altogether? I understand that Petes can have ice cream, but Kaphams should abstain. Probably jelly and aspic, jellied meat will go here... It’s easier with ordinary dishes, but with desserts it’s somehow difficult...” - yes, you understand correctly. And desserts are rarely Ayurvedic correct. Moreover, according to Ayurveda, it is better to eat desserts first, which is what they do in India - sweet first, since the sweet taste is the heaviest, difficult to digest, and if it is “put on top” at the end of the meal, it will disrupt the process of assimilation of other tastes. So the Ayurvedic habitual diet of those who grew up in the post-Soviet space - soup, main course, compote, dessert, and on holidays, even Olivier with herring under a fur coat, does not fit into the Ayurvedic style. Therefore, it doesn’t matter if you don’t follow the Ayurvedic guidelines, then you can eat as your parents taught you. If you understand that following parental advice does not work, then habits need to be changed, and desserts too, and the order in which they are eaten. “Or maybe there are cinnamon rolls. Or cookies. Let’s say, oatmeal, or sesame (I’ve seen recipes on websites, oatmeal with raisins, for example), or baked cottage cheese with raisins, or apple marmalade, and even jam” - everything is possible within reasonable limits, especially if the constitution and digestion allow. I have a husband with perfect digestion, and I constantly bake him something; he doesn’t feel well without bread. I don’t touch this myself, the scales stand still, and I’m weak to God. And as soon as I start trying these buns, then I will have to stay in the pool and lose weight there all day. “I beg you, tell me what’s best to put on the table for tea, I can’t imagine what to prepare that’s healthy, so that there’s no harm during the holidays, and so that the harvest doesn’t go to waste - )” - I most often only put ginger paste with tea, sometimes some some dry crackers, fresh (unaged cheese), dried fruits that I make myself (in special drying). In general, I have long lost the habit of the tea drinking that existed (and probably still exists in Russia). I remember that in Moscow at work we drank tea 3 times a day. This often replaced food - tea and sandwiches at any time of the day. Well, about celebrating holidays - we don’t celebrate them in our family. None. That’s why I don’t have any thoughts about “What to serve at the holiday table.” For us, every day is a holiday, and not when the government appoints it (smile!). “A separate question about compotes, uzvars - what to combine with, can it be combined with baked goods or cookies?” - well, there are no recommendations here other than common sense, knowledge of your constitution and confidence that digestion is correct. If digestion is good and agni is high, eat and drink whatever you want. Even if they serve nails for lunch, such an organism will digest everything. Those. you need to put emphasis on this, then you will hardly even think about what to eat, a little of everything, within reasonable limits. “The question of desserts remains open, what can you say about this?” - There is nothing to add to the above. Those desserts that most people love are stupid in terms of usefulness. But tasty (for some). If he speaks from the point of view of Ayurveda, then Ayurvedic tastes are taken into account, not culinary ones. So you have to choose what is more important to you. For example, I have gone without any desserts for many years. I ate, drank tea with ginger, I don’t need any desserts. Well, maybe 3 times a year, this small piece. “The only thing I understood was to limit (or even completely exclude) a raw food diet and meat (except for cotton wool, it seems), walking around your blog, there is little gastronomic information, but it’s interesting to eat food that does not make us sick =)” - This is an advertising blog, I don’t have any task to treat and tell everything here, I do this in personal consultations. Well, I also don’t have time for gastronomic posts, and I don’t feel like writing, I haven’t been interested in it for a long time. In my youth I was a great cook, but that all faded away. I'm not interested in food. Its importance in our lives is greatly exaggerated. The craving for many tastes is well explained by psychologists. And imbalance of doshas. And when there is balance in the body, there is no desire for anything special. “Thank you for the valuable information, I will be glad if you give me some advice on desserts, and on the Internet, in principle, you can find the recipes themselves, but what effect they have on the doshas cannot be understood by an uninitiated person, but I would like to protect myself in at least some way “—don’t eat these desserts in large quantities, that’s how you’ll protect yourself. It's simple! “What do you eat for the holidays? How do you decorate your table when guests come, what do you personally treat? Interesting =)” – I already wrote above – my family doesn’t celebrate holidays. In immigration, everything is changing, what was celebrated in Russia more than 20 years ago - it’s funny to celebrate here - well, what is the 1st and 9th of May here? New Year is not celebrated here either. At all. Only Christmas on December 25th. It’s my birthday every day. I woke up - alive, healthy - and here was the birth. We haven’t given gifts to each other for a long time, we don’t accept them from anyone, and we don’t exchange them with close friends. Everything at home is cleared of rubbish, I don’t need anything in the house, not only do I not use perfume, but almost no one does, in Canada almost everywhere there is a “perfume free environment”, in many places there are warning signs (in case someone has allergies), blouses I choose myself, I don’t wear handbags. A very simple and easy life, as in the parable about the wise man walking through the market with his disciples. He approaches all sorts of things for sale and says, “How good!” and goes to the next “How good!” His students ask him, “Teacher, what’s good? You didn’t buy anything, did you?” - “It’s good that you can do without this, and without this too!” Well, one more thing about the holidays. There are many local Canadian holidays, but these are just “Family Day”, “Labor Day” - basically one name, so as not to work, but to relax. No feasts are held on this occasion, well, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas. But all summer they hang out just like that, taking advantage of the good weather - all sorts of picnics, barbecues - for no reason, just to chat. Guests hardly come to me, I don’t have time to cook and then clean all day, and even sit with them all day. Here many people prefer to meet somewhere in a cafe, bar, or restaurant. The restaurants here are simple in most cases - they only serve food, no evening dresses, no music, you can sit and talk quietly. At any moment you can refer to business and leave. And some guests are not so easy to escort out of the house. Of course, there are banquet halls, but these are for special celebrations). So I don’t have this issue - celebrating holidays, meeting guests and treating them. Everything is very simple. We rarely have guests in the house, only those with whom we feel comfortable, they eat the same thing as us - the simplest things.

    Drugs to increase lactation

    In some cases, folk remedies for increasing lactation do not help. It often happens that a young mother simply does not have enough time to prepare tinctures and drinks. In this case, the woman is forced to use some medications with a similar effect.

    At the same time, taking medicines and pharmaceutical teas to increase lactation does not cancel the normalization of the diet, since this is the main way to increase the amount of milk. Here is a list of some effective drugs to increase lactation:

    • Lactagon. The composition of the drug includes royal jelly in combination with nettle, carrots and some other components, due to which the desired result is achieved;
    • Femilak-2. Powdered milk product containing protein, vitamins and some beneficial minerals;
    • Lactavit. Cumin, fennel, nettle and anise - the most powerful herbs that improve lactation are collected here;
    • Apilak. A preparation based on bee jelly with a variety of microelements and vitamins;
    • Tea "Granny's Basket". It contains useful herbs in the right proportions. This is a ready-made answer to the question of how to increase lactation - packaged and waiting for a woman on the shelf of a store or pharmacy. This tea saves time spent on independently preparing a mixture for brewing drinks;
    • Mlekoin. Homeopathic medicine in granules, taken before meals.
